What Is a Tender?

By Josue Carrión

What Is a Tender?

Have you ever wondered what a tender is? Would you like to know what it is and how to generate income with one?

The truth is that it is not all that complicated. A tender is “the regulated process by which an organization publicly announces a need, requests offers to meet it, evaluates those offers, and selects one of them. This term can also refer to an auction process.”

(Wikipedia, Tender.)

How can I participate?

To participate, you go through a “business auction” where various parties compete to win by presenting their work, results, and the cost of their services — something like a public proposal or a roundtable. The way to participate depends on the company; it is usually announced publicly or through their own platforms. We can recognize it as subcontracts from companies for specific jobs, such as landscaping, electrical work, plumbing, administrative services, transportation, etc.

This type of work is not permanent — it is temporary, usually annual. Even if you were selected last year, this year you must reapply with your work portfolio, evidence, and your cost for the job. Even so, it is a method of working alongside major companies.

Do you have a business and a skilled team in a strong area? Look for tenders at major companies. Apply and try to win the bid. Remember that winning a tender can also help make your business known, as other companies may recognize you and even reach out to offer subcontracts outside of a tender process — it all depends on the quality of your work.
